Trails

Stratham Hill Park is a riding area that completely exemplifies the idea that sometimes good things come in small packages. While the available mileage here isn't all that grand (generally speaking around 10 miles or so with all the unnamed trails included), what is available is some wildly fun New England riding. Composed of the short ups and downs that often characterize New England trails, Stratham surprisingly has some pretty steep sections that can be challenging on the way up and a ripping good time on the way down. Taking Eagle from the top yields a quick, mildly off-camber rip down to one of the parking lots.  Lovell Road is one of the rougher trails in the area, with roots and rocks in fair abundance, but it's a fun romp nonetheless. Don't miss the Kitty Rock and Long Hill descents, which are steep and fun.  Fire Pit will give you some good twisties and Dead Fish is a smooth switchback flow.  USA Today and the Crockett Farm loop are not to be missed either.

The Titcomb Mountain singletrack mountain bike trails wind up and down Titcomb Mountain several times and feature switchbacks, rock and log challenges and bridges. The trails can be ridden as described below or sections can be cut-off or added to by using the ski trails, which are also open to bike use in the summer. All trails are two-way so watch for oncoming traffic.

The Transfer Station Trails are multi-use trails of around 3.9 miles that surround the transfer facility and the two Eddie ponds. Big Eddie Pond is a popular fishing spot during the fall months when Trout are abundant. Trails are generally flat and wide, allowing for a variety of uses. Accessed by parking near the town transfer facility, the trail network is often used by ATVs, snowmobiles, mountain bikes, horses, and joggers. From this location, visitors may also access the Topsham Pump Track for biking.

The Trolley trail system can best be accessed off Scuppo Rd., Woodbury. These trails were built by NEMBA volunteers and run parallel to the long existing Trolley bed trail. The first trail is "Trolley Dash" which is a lollipop trail with some rollers and skinnies and is 2 miles long with Red blazes. Riders can also access another lollypop trail called "Off your Trolley" from Trolley Dash. This trail is a bit more technical and includes some rock garden downhill sections and is also 2 miles. These trails have been in the works for nearly 3yrs Thanks to Paula Burton and Ryan Tucker and their experience with advocating for trails in Woodbury.

Tucker Brook Town Forest is a 258 acre conservation area with many multi-use recreation trails. Tucker Brook runs through the property and the trails cross the brook at various points. The forest has many wetlands and White Pine groves. Be sure to see the Tucker Brook Falls and look for sections of trail along the brook that have many glacial erratics. The trails are mostly single track and hilly. There are few technical spots, but all are walkable. Some of the trails are marked while others are not. If you get lost, remember that Savage Road runs to your west and Route 101 bypass is to your east. The trails all end up on local roads close to where you parked. In all there are about 10 miles of trails at Tucker Brook.

Miles of trails twist and turn around the Muddy River, through 1,000+ acres of forest and fields in the rolling hills of East Wallingford. Horseback riders, Hikers, and Mountain Bikers have been enjoying the trail system (and giving back to it) for decades.

Easy to get lost and have a little fun - there is a large network of trails intersecting the Orono, Old Town and University Trail system. Most trails in this system are cross country trails with various amounts of sanitation, roots, rocks. You could make an endless combination of rides in here. Want to learn to string together a good ride in here? We suggest going to a group ride with Rose Bike in Orono. They host weekly group rides including Intermediate MTB (Monday and Saturday), Beginner MTB (Tuesday), Women's ride (Wednesday) and Mixed Surface (Tuesday). Trails behind the Orono High School are groomed for fat bikes in winter.  

The developing Upper Charles Trail will one day total 24 miles, linking the communities of Milford, Ashland, Sherborn, Holliston, Framingham, and Hopkinton along a former railroad bed. As of 2018, more than 13 miles of the trail are complete. As travelers pedal through Holliston, they will encounter the historical Phipps Tunnel, constructed to allow steam trains to travel under Highland Street; the design of the tunnel, with its curved walls, is quite unique. Another highlight of this section is the Bogastow Brook Viaduct, a beautiful stone bridge with eight arches. As the trail approaches its end, you'll also traverse the scenic Dopping Brook Conservation Area. Throughout this stretch, it is clear how much the local community takes pride in the trail, from the clean and well-maintained surface to the installation of trailside art.

Trails are located in the Great Gains Memorial Forest. The network is a mix of intermediate to advanced technical all-mountain and downhill terrain, as well as a machine built flow/freeride trail which starts from the summit of the ski area.

Weetamoo Woods in Tiverton, RI is a town owned and volunteer maintained tract of land that is open to non motorized recreation. Weetamoo has over 750 acres of varied habitats, including rare coastal oak-holly forest and an Atlantic white cedar swamp. While there are only 5-6 miles of trail, additional mileage can be found in the abutting Pardon Gray Preserve and Tiverton town forest, making it possible to do a decent 8-9 mile ride without repeating trails. The trails at Weetamoo are pretty typical of New England. Lots of rocks and roots and due to the topography there are quite a few wet spots. Some of the worst are bridged, but there are still many wet spots, so avoid riding after heavy rain. The trails are generally well marked, using colored markers. The trails consist of a mix of single and double track. The singletracks are quite technical, and even the forest roads have many challenging sections. The Orange and Green trails are favorites of mine, as well as the Ridge trail at Parson Gray preserve. To add extra miles, ride Lafayette road to the far east end, almost to Lake Rd, then take the trail north into the Town Forest. Some of the most aggressive technical trails are north of Lafayette Road and not shown on the map.

The West Barnstable Conservation Area is one of Cape Cod’s treasures and one of its prime riding areas. It’s a 1200-acre parcel of conservation land in the village of West Barnstable. The main recreation focus is multi-use and revolves around mountain biking, hiking, trail running, and cross country skiing.

West Hill Dam Reserve is a United States Army Corps of Engineers flood control project with a recreational park and wildlife management area located at Uxbridge, Massachusetts. West Hill Dam and Park remain open year round. Outside posted hours of operation, please feel free to park at the gates and walk in to enjoy your park. In West Hill Park the West River widens to form a large, natural swimming hole, known locally as Harrington Pool. There is a mix of about 15 miles of mountain biking specific and multi-use trails. The trails are typical New England style trails with lots of twists and turns and ups and downs, with access to the trails from a network of double track trails and service roads.

The natural setting surrounding West Thompson Lake is enjoyed year-round. Pleasing views from the dam offer sightseers and photographers a panoramic view of the area. Park Rangers manage the 1,857 acres, in which the forest covers approximately 1,125 of those acres. There are three main trail systems at West Thompson Lake; yellow, orange and blue. All-in-all there are 17 miles of marked trails to enjoy. While the single track trails range from novice to advanced in areas, there are plenty of cart roads and double track sections that are great for beginners, kids, families and casual riders.

Willowdale State Forest is located mostly in the town of Ipswich. Many of the forest's trails are easy doubletracks, which makes Willowdale an excellent place for Family-friendly riding. And there are three color coded marked loops to follow. The forest's singletrack trails are some of the most enjoyable trails that I have ever ridden. The best of these lay in the northern section of the Pine Swamp area. The forest is divided up into two main parcels. The aforementioned Pine Swamp area and the Hood Pond area. Most people park on Ipswich Road alongside the Ipswich River. You'll find numbered markers at all of the forest's main intersections. Bring a copy of the maps and you'll always know where you are. The Bay Circuit Trail runs through Willowdale and is marked by white blazes.

Wompatuck is bisected by Union Street. In the past most of the off road bicycling was done on the right side of Union Street where the majority of the park’s unbroken woodland exists. But, over the years the park’s staff, aided by NEMBA and area mountain bikers, has been hard at work creating an entirely new network of singletrack trails on the left side of the park in some areas recently reacquired by the State.

Woody Hill is the common name for four parcels of preserved land in Westerly, RI. The Woody Hill Management Area and Westerly Municipal Land Trust being the largest and the Westerly Land Trust and the Narragansett Indian Tribe being the others. The area has a surprising amount of climbing being less than a mile from the ocean. This area is typical New England with ridge lines, beautiful forests, streams and ponds. Trails were developed between 2017-2020 and are a mix of fun, fast beginner friendly to very technical designed for advanced riders. The best thing about Woody Hill is there is something for everyone.
