NW CT NEMBA July Kids/Family MTB Ride

Event Date

7/26/15 10:00am

Our First Kids/Family MTB ride of 2015 is scheduled for July 26th. We'll start the season by riding from Sessions Woods WMA in Burlington CT. Meet at 10am and we'll get rolling as soon as everyone is ready. Please respond if you're planning on coming so we know to wait for everyone.

Participants should be able to ride a bike without training wheels, and, as always, everyone must wear a helmet. The pace will be slow, with plenty of stops for re-hydration and snacks. We'll ride 1-4 miles or so, depending on the group.

The goal is to introduce children to the fun of riding bikes in the woods. No one will be left behind and we'll do our best to make sure that everyone has a good time!

You do not have to be a NEMBA member to join the ride.

Event Date

5/10/15 11:00am to 2:00pm
Join us for a low key, kid and beginner friendly ride. First in a series, this ride is specifically for new, young and young-at-heart mountain bikers. You will learn basic skills in a low-key company and beautiful setting.

This will be a no-drop, mellow pace ride with plenty of breaks and bailouts. Please come a few minutes early, so we can get everyone geared up and comfy for an awesome adventure.

A must: a bike with fat tires (2"+), helmet, closed shoes good for riding and hiking, plenty of water, snacks and bug spray.

Way to celebrate Mother's Day!

B-K NEMBA Tuesday Night Rides - Kid/Family rides 8/26

Event Date

8/26/14 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Are you new to mountain biking?  Maybe you’re getting back into it after a “few” years off?  Or ready to give your kids a taste of riding bikes in the woods?  Or just maybe you’ve wanted to do a couple of the regular Tuesday Night Rides, but all the “hammerhead” talk scared you off?

Well, the Tuesday Night Ride (TNR) format is changing.  Every other week the ride will be a beginner ride designed to be a fun way for people to experience mountain biking.  We’ll meet at Stonewall Farm at 5:30 and have some fun on the trails.  Stonewall has a variety of trail types – ranging from wide wagon roads to steep and twisty single track.  But the nice thing is we can ride sections and keep the difficulty/length at the proper level for the group(s).  Another nice thing is you can get ice cream at the farm after your ride (always helpful with kids).

Mountain Biking is a GREAT way for kids and teens to build strong bodies, gain confidence, have a ton of fun and enjoy being outside!  That goes for adults as well.  Parents aren’t required to ride, but extra adults in the group can sure be handy.  Come spend some quality time in nature with your kids!

The exact route and ride length will vary depending the group size, skill level, and specific interests.  But plan on being in the woods 1-1.5 hours.  Ride distance will average from 3-6 miles, and all will be waited for.  The riding will be targeted for kids 9+ and beginner adults, or parents who want to ride with their kids.  That’s not to say you can’t bring your 4 year old out on their balance bike to play around… or that a more experienced rider can’t come out and join us for some low key riding and give me a hand.

The new family/kids rides will start July 29th.  The last ride will be August 26th, just before school starts.  Ride dates are July 29th, August 12th and 26th.  Depending on the interest level and schedules we can continue into the fall.  If the kids/family rides don’t continue for whatever reason all TNRs will revert back to regular rides.  I would love to continue this.

Riders must have a serviceable bike, properly fitting helmet, and water for the ride.  All riders must wear closed-toed shoes - no flip flops or sandals.  Riders (or their parents) will also be required to sign a waiver.
The traditional TNRs will continue on the off weeks, and beginner adults who feel they are ready for something longer and more challenging are encouraged to join those rides.  This will be a good chance to find out where you are on the learning curve.

There is also a kid’s race team that meets regularly.  Their focus is training for local MTB races.  They ride/train at a higher level.  This kids TNR series will serve as a feeder program for the race team.  If your child has the interest we can get them hooked up.

It would be great if other regular TNR riders could show up and help out.  I’ll need lots of help keeping every one having fun.  Reach out to me if you want to get involved in this great opportunity.
